with that deadly type of cancer inside the body. Among surgery,
chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the last type of treatment has been
regarded as the safest with the least probability of any other side
effect. Radiation therapy was also among the earlier procedures of
treating the Mesothelioma patients.
As per the statistics given by the American Cancer Society, you can get a clear picture that over 50% of patients suffering from different types of Mesothelioma cancer have been prescribed with the radiation therapy. One of the valid reasons behind this is that the person can lead a normal lifestyle with this type of treatment but in case of aggressive surgery some other type of problem can be traced in the body at a later stage.
Rays for relief
What is radiation therapy and how is it conducted in the human body? Rays of high energy are bombarded on the cancerous cells to allow those cells to burn. In this way the deadly cells residing in your body are killed.
Can radiation therapy prevent the growth of any further cancer cell in the body? To a great extent radiation therapy as a regular treatment procedure can prohibit the growth of cancer cells inside the body but complete cure is not possible.
Where is radiation therapy different from chemotherapy? In the latter process the whole body comes into the affect in some way. The chemo applied does not even leave the healthy cells inside your body and thus indirectly affects them. Radiation therapy can specifically make the rays fall on the cancer cells and get them removed without affecting the other cells.
Two types
Radiation therapy can be divided into two types - external radiation therapy and the brachytherapy. In the first therapeutic process, a sort of X-ray machine is utilized to pass the rays on the cancer cells from the external part of the body. The radiation process has to be conducted weekly or as per prescribed by the doctor. The effect of radiation can last for a few days and then again you need to apply the same procedure.
In brachytherapy the rays are radiated internally directly on the tumor region. You have to take the clinical assistance for days to undergo this therapeutic process and have to be hospitalized during the period when the therapy will be conducted.
In either of the therapies complete healing is never assured but you can stay better till you are alive.
